Services for Charlotte Austin, 94, of Sullivan, were conducted 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon, MO with Pastor Mary Avizenis officiating. Burial followed at Bourbon Cemetery, Bourbon.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Charlotte was born July 26, 1922, in Bronx, NY, the daughter of Charles and Susie Bachtler. She graduated high school in 1941 and then met the love of her life, George Weppner. They were married on August 30, 1941 at the St. James Church in Bronx. Together, they moved to the St. Louis area for a time before buying a home and moving to Sleepy Hollow in Sullivan, MO. They were blessed with three children: Ruth, Wayne, and Linda.
After George’s death, Charlotte married Roger Austin and to this union a daughter, Betty Sue was born. She also welcomed another daughter, Carmen whom Roger had from a previous marriage. Charlotte worked as a waitress in many of the local restaurants in the Sullivan area. She worked at By-lo Furniture as a salesperson for many years, she also worked at Bobber Café as a salesclerk and hostess before going to work at Wal-Mart as a door greeter. She worked there until her retirement.
After retirement, she worked part-time as an office clerk at the Sullivan Elementary School until the age of 90, where most of her hours were volunteer. She made her home at the Sullivan Apartments for 20-plus years and then went to Victoria Place in Sullivan. She was living at Meramec Nursing Center at the time of her passing.
Charlotte’s passions were her family, her belief in God and a love for music. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing, especially with her daughter, Betty Sue. Charlotte loved to read the Bible and non-fiction books, particularly self help books. She also liked to write poetry. Charlotte gave her heart to the Lord at a very early age. At the time of her passing, she was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bourbon. She attended Sunday school and church when she was able.
Charlotte will be remembered for her sweet spirit and gentle nature and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Charlotte is survived by her children: Ruth Nevills of Carthage, MO, Wayne Weppner (and his wife, Betty) of Sullivan, Linda Usery (and her husband, Ed) of Stanton, MO, and Betty Sue Walsh (and her husband, Maple) of Sullivan; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, George Weppner & Roger Austin; her parents; her sister, Evelyn (and her husband, Wilber); her lifelong friends, Dezi and Ruth Finnegan (New Jersey) and son-in-law, David Nevills.
Charlotte passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Meramec Nursing Center in Sullivan.
